The Hotchkiss was made to provide France's infantry with an automatic gun that did not need a two man crew. The Hotchkiss held up to 30 rounds of the French 8mm Lebel cartridge. It could fire 400 rounds per minute. Sadly the Hotchkiss was to heavy to be a light machine gun so it was soon used in airplanes, and vehicles. The Hotchkiss was not used much in World War 2 because it was outdated and it also had a tendency to jam.
